A long restoration of the Trinity-Izmailovsky (Trinity) Cathedral was completed in St. Petersburg, Sergei Makarov, the head of the committee on state control, use and protection of historical and cultural monuments, told reporters on Tuesday.
"A landmark event has occurred. The 21-year history of the restoration of the Trinity Cathedral has ended. Almost 10 years were spent on the reconstruction of the cathedral after a major fire in 2006. Today we only have to do external works on waterproofing the foundations and landscaping the garden this year. The restoration of the cathedral is over," said S. Makarov.
This year, 26 million rubles will be allocated from the budget for work with foundations and landscaping of the garden.
The restoration of the Trinity Cathedral was carried out in St. Petersburg since 1995. All the years while the temple was under construction, he remained active.
In 2006, a major fire occurred: scaffolds burned at the cathedral, domes collapsed. From then until 2016, about 1 billion rubles were allocated from the budget. on the restoration of the cathedral.
Trinity-Izmailovsky (Trinity) Cathedral - an Orthodox church on Trinity Avenue in the Admiralty district of St. Petersburg. It was solemnly consecrated in 1835.
The cathedral was closed in April 1938. In those years, it was supposed to be demolished or reorganized into an urban crematorium. The temple building was damaged in World War II. After the war, there was a warehouse in the building, basements were used as a vegetable store.
Trinity Cathedral was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1990.
